About Friulano
Friulano is a native grape of northeastern Italy, particularly the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where it has long been a staple white wine, especially in Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli. Once known as Tocai Friulano, the name was changed due to EU regulations to avoid confusion with Hungary’s Tokaji.
Friulano is prized for its almond-like finish, saline minerality, and understated elegance. While not as aromatic as some white grapes, it offers clean citrus and herbaceous notes with great food-pairing versatility. It’s often the locals’ choice for aperitivo, especially with cured meats and seafood.
The grape is genetically related to Sauvignonasse, and small plantings exist in Chile under that name.
