Casillero del Diablo is the flagship and most recognized wine brand of Viña Concha y Toro, Chile’s largest producer. Launched in 1966, this iconic label spans premium to super‑premium tiers and is celebrated in over 140 countries for offering premium quality at exceptional value.

Its vineyards stretch across Chile’s most notable regions—including Maipo, Rapel, Limarí, Maule, and Casablanca—each imparting distinctive terroir and varietal character driven by Andes-fed alluvial soils and coastal breezes. Under technical direction of Marcelo Papa since 1998, Casillero reflects both traditional winemaking and global appeal, producing a wide portfolio centered on varietal reds (especially Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot) as well as whites and a classic Brut sparkling line

History

Founding Legacy (Late 19th Century – 1966)

Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, founder of Viña Concha y Toro, began storing his best wines in a locked cellar at the Pirque estate. After noticing mysterious thefts, he spread a local legend—that the devil haunted the cellar—to ward off thieves. The myth gave rise to the brand name Casillero del Diablo (“the devil’s cellar”)

Label Launch & Expansion (1966–1998)

The first Casillero del Diablo Cabernet Sauvignon was released in 1966. In succeeding years, the brand expanded rapidly across Chile with varietal styles such as Malbec, Carmenère, and Sauvignon Blanc, becoming Viña Concha y Toro’s key value tier

Premiumization & Global Reach (1998–Present)

From 1998, under winemaker Marcelo Papa, Casillero developed premium lines like Reserva Privada and the Devil’s Collection. The brand increased its presence in over 140 markets and earned recognition as a “best value” and New World winery of the year

Wine Styles

Red Wines

Casillero del Diablo produces approachable, fruit-forward reds—Cabernet Sauvignon leads the house style with ripe dark fruit, smooth tannins, and oak balance. Carménère, Malbec, and Merlot add variety across styles. Both Reserva and Reserva Privada tiers reflect increasing concentration and subtle complexity.

White Wines & Rosés

Chilean white varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and even Riesling or Viognier appear in both Reserva and Reserva Privada expressions. These whites show crisp acidity, stone fruit or tropical aromatics, and bright clarity.

Sparkling & Other Lines

The Devil’s Collection includes Devil's Brut—a classic sparkling made from Chardonnay (notable from Limarí Valley terroir). This limited-edition label reflects super-premium positioning with elegance and freshness
