Central Otago is the only wine region in New Zealand with a truly continental climate. It is surrounded by high mountains that block the coastal rains, making it the country’s driest wine region. The climate is one of extremes: winters are freezing cold, while summers are hot and dry.

The key to its success is the massive diurnal temperature range during the long, sunny autumn days. This allows the Pinot Noir grapes to develop intense, concentrated fruit flavours while the cold nights help to retain the acidity and structure essential for high-quality wine.

Located at the top of the South Island, Marlborough is one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest regions. It is protected from the rain-bearing westerly winds by the Southern Alps, which creates a long, cool, and dry growing season.

The region’s climate is defined by a significant diurnal range—warm, sun-drenched days allow for full flavor development, while cool nights preserve the grapes’ natural acidity, leading to the vibrant, fresh style for which it is famous. The free-draining alluvial soils of the main river valleys are also crucial to quality.
