Geography & Climate
Located in north-central Spain, the Rioja region follows the path of the Ebro River. It is protected from the harsh weather of the Atlantic by the Cantabrian Mountains to the north. This creates a continental climate with warm, dry summers and cool winters, ideal for viticulture.
The region is divided into three distinct sub-zones, each with its own microclimate and soil profile, contributing to the complexity of the wines.
Winemaking in Rioja dates back to Roman times, but its modern identity was forged in the mid-19th century. When the phylloxera pest devastated the vineyards of Bordeaux, French winemakers traveled to Rioja, bringing with them their expertise, including the art of aging wine in small oak barrels (barricas). This established Rioja’s signature style.
After a period of decline, the region underwent a quality revolution in the latter half of the 20th century, with a renewed focus on terroir. In 1991, Rioja was the first region in Spain to be awarded the top-tier DOCa status.
Located at higher altitudes in the western part of the region, this zone is known for producing elegant, aromatic wines with high acidity. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone.
Located on the north bank of the Ebro River in the Basque province of Álava. The wines are known for their full body and fine acidity.
The easternmost zone, with a warmer, drier climate influenced by the Mediterranean. It is known for producing ripe, powerful Garnacha.
Crianza: A youthful style, aged for at least one year in oak. It is fruit-forward with notes of red cherry and vanilla.
Reserva: A more serious style, aged for at least three years, with at least one year in oak. These wines show a beautiful balance of fruit and savory notes of spice, leather, and tobacco.
Gran Reserva: Made only in the best vintages, this style is aged for at least five years, with a minimum of two years in oak. The wines are incredibly complex, silky, and elegant, with delicate fruit and highly developed savory aromas.
White Rioja (Blanco): Traditionally, these were heavily oaked, nutty, and savory wines. The modern style is fresh, crisp, and aromatic, though the classic style is making a comeback.
